Prayer Request for Adam
UPDATE: 1-25-26, Got the object out in surgery. It was what caused the holes in the stomach, not an ulcer, as per the surgeon. Item sent to pathology. Still on ventilator today. His incisions look good, but he has a drain and nasal feeding tube, so they’re concerned that he might rip things out. His color looked better to me, maybe the drain getting out some of that infection. Plus the surgeon removed a lot of it. Pray for the right outcome and timing as to the vent being removed. Thank You Lord for all you’ve done, and will do. No matter, we know how faithful You have been, and Your grace and mercy are so tender.
Update: 1-24-26, ICU Nurse Emma says today, maybe noon is exploratory surgery to remove whatever object Adam swallowed that staff somehow left within his reach, and also missed seeing him swallow it. Pray for a successful surgery and recovery from it. Thank you all.
As many of you know, Adam is my son. Ten years ago a friend of his asked (more than once), to have anyone (in the group playing pool together), to take a ride with him on his new motorcycle. Adam finally relented, he was always a people pleaser. Somewhere down the road they got into an accident. They do not know if someone turned in front of them, or it was gravel on the road, or just high speeds. Both of them were in serious shape, and both were put on ventilators. We didn’t know what was ahead, but we did know the One who walked with us through it, if we would but lean on Him.
None of us are promised tomorrow. Serious question in love. Do you know for sure where you would go if you died today?
Adam was diagnosed with a severe TBI and they said he would be nothing more than a vegetable, and advised me to walk away from him. Although he is in a Skilled nursing facility, we have not walked away. Some of our hopes and desires changed over time as we fought hard to help him walk, move, loosen up his constrictures in his limbs. I’m not going to go into too much history, but that is the basic background. To those who have opinions of our choice to have him in a Skilled Nursing Facility, I’d like to ask you to keep those to yourself. We’ve had accusations (one said I caused him to live this way by ‘not pulling the plug’). There was no plug to pull… People always have opinions, oftentimes without knowledge.
So here is our prayer request. We received a call Wednesday Night from the facility he is in. They don’t know what happened other than they said he ‘may’ have swallowed a foreign object, but they had no idea what that foreign object might be. He was vomiting blood. They said he projectile vomited blood while out watching TV in the TV room. They said they weren’t certain at that time it was blood, they thought maybe he could have had a red colored liquid for dinner, so went to the cafeteria to ask. Here it got a bit blurry as that is when they mentioned he possibly swallowed something but did not know what it was. And when the facility doctor was called, they opted for a wait and see since he seemed to be doing ok. (To know Adam is to know normally he is in a good mood and friendly, even if not feeling well). They cleaned him up, and after night-time pills, his roommate alerted them that he was vomiting blood again. The facility said another nurse in the hallway had seen as well, so they sent him to the hospital. At 4:45 in the morning, we found out where he had been sent (he had been sent to one hospital maybe and transferred to another?) I still don’t know the whole story on that.
The blood was coming out from both ends, and they were prepared to do an endoscopy yesterday and postponed because some of the imaging showed some air bubbles on one side, portending holes in the stomach. They consulted with a surgical team, all the while he was sedated with a central line to the neck, tubes in his nose suctioning out the blood in his stomach, and of course an IV. The doctor said he was trending towards being septic and they were treating him for that with Zosyn. They reversed course and wanted to do the endoscopy anyways, stating they wouldn’t know where to go with exploratory surgery (even though they know where the air bubbles are located). So I approved an endoscopy which they ventilated him for so he wouldn’t aspirate blood into his lungs.
The doctor came out and said that he found a ‘big ball of plastic‘ in his stomach. He was able to get part of it out, but he said it kept breaking off. It is unclear at this time if there are any other foreign objects (perhaps in the glove itself). They are leaving him sedated today, to rest, and hopefully clear out more blood. They are supposedly going to attempt this again on Saturday. If not successful, then surgery. Questions as to why there are holes (or potential holes) in the stomach with softer plastic aren’t really answered yet. Before Adam was removed from the ventilator we were talking to his nurse, and the plastic she said looked like medical gloves and were blue. The blood being blackened, obscured the true color.
I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord. Psalm 27:13-14
So we wait, but we wait upon the Lord. We know He is good, and we’re keeping our mind stayed on Him (Isa 26:3; Heb 12:2). This feels like a repeat to see Adam like this. This very same day I had a video conference with him. I read to him from the Word. Sometimes he wants a particular book. He chooses Job a lot. Or the book of John. He likes Psalms too. I usually give him a multiple choice, but sometimes he doesn’t choose any of my choices. Last time we had started going through Zechariah. I started where we left off, and he seemed enraptured. It is usually naptime (or close to it) when we have those visits, and so he can often get sleepy. But he was wide-eyed and focused. We should be too. Jesus is coming soon, of that I have no doubt. We still occuppy until then, but we can discern the times and the seasons of the Day of the Lord (1 Thess 5:1-2). We will be gathered together to Him in the clouds. The earth will see a time like no other, some call it the Tribulation, or the Time of Jacob’s (Israel’s) Trouble. It is a seven year period that primarily Daniel (9:24-27), Jeremiah (30:6-7) and Revelation (chapters 6-19) delve deeply into. However, there is much also in Isaiah, Joel, and Zechariah. See also Ezekiel, Amos, Obadiah, Zephaniah, Malachi, Hosea, Nahum, Micah, & Habakkuk.
I say all this because I told Adam about the symbolism and imagery seen in Zechariah (the horsemen, the two Olive trees, the golden Lampstand), and restoration coming to Israel. He truly seemed engrossed, and a couple times when I asked if he wanted me to continue, it was a quick and unequivocal, Yes! Some might find that odd that I don’t keep it simple with someone with a severe TBI. I never know exactly how much he understands, but I believe it’s more than we probably know. The Bible is able to give us wisdom and understanding, so I leave it to the Lord as to what His Word will accomplish with him (Isaiah 55:10-11).
Adam has believed on Jesus as His Savior. I talk to him about the good news of salvation, and once I share again about who Jesus is and what He did for us on the cross, I’ll usually ask him, what a person needs to do to be saved from the penalty of hell. His answer (rightly) is ‘believe on Jesus’. I praise God he doesn’t have to deal with the Satanic onslaught out there of those who add conditions to the gospel, or change the free gift of eternal life to probationary gift.

Thank you Justin! There’s a certain kind of peace when you know someone has simply believed on Christ as his Savior, and are resting in Him vs. something else. I know no matter what happens here, if the worst, Adam will be with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:8).
