JESUS: The Seven (or 10) ‘I AM’ statements…

Some recognize Seven I AM statements in the book of John. Although not one of the typically accepted Seven I AM’ statements many recognize from the Bible, the LIVING WATER is worth noting as one of his titles as God.

But are there only seven I AM statements or are there possibly more? It looks like there at least Ten (10) ‘I AM’ statements. And a bonus one I included at the bottom.

WHOSOEVER WILL

And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.  Revelation 22:17

RIVERS OF LIVING WATER

In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.) John 7:37-39

Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. John 4:13-14

Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware that all our fathers were under the cloud, all passed through the sea,  all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ.  1 Cor 10:1-4

Ps42-7-8

THE I AM STATEMENTS FOUND IN THE BIBLE

I AM

that I AM

This is the main I AM statement.

Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I AM.  John 8:58 (ETERNAL)

And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world. I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I AM (he), ye shall die in your sins. (Jn 8:24)

These verses from John above are referencing the Scripture from Exodus 3:13-15

Then Moses said to God, “Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?”  And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”  Moreover God said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: ‘The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is My name forever, and this is My memorial to all generations.’

In John 8, Jesus reminds the Pharisees of all He had said of Himself, including saying He is THE Light of this World. Only God gives light to the World and also to every man who comes into this world. He is the TRUE LIGHT, not the light that the world tells us to go to, not the light that they would give that is really darkness, but the only TRUE LIGHT.

That was the TRUE LIGHT, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.   He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.  John 1:9-10

Other I AM statements found in His Word

See what other I AM statements you can find in God’s Word. Here is one example.

I AM the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” Rev 1:8 (Referring to Isaiah 41:4; 44:6)

I AM the Bread of Life

(THE TRUE BREAD, THE BREAD FROM HEAVEN, THE LIVING BREAD)

JOHN6-35IamBreadLife-aThen Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world. Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.

And Jesus said unto them, I AM the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.  John 6:32-35

I AM the Light of the World

(LIGHT OF LIFE)

Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I AM the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.  John 8:12

In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. John 1:4-5,9-10

I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.  John 12:46

The people which sat in darkness saw a great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up. Matt. 4:16

I AM the Door or Gate

(Gate of the Lord)

john10-9Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I AM the door of the sheep. I AM the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. John 10:7,9 (Psalm 23:2)

Prophecy regarding this:

Open to me the gates of righteousness: I will go into them, and I will praise the Lord: This gate of the Lord, into which the righteous shall enter.  I will praise thee: for thou hast heard me, and art become my salvation.  The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner. This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvellous in our eyes. This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:19-24

I AM The Good Shepherd

I AM the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep. The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep. I AM the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep. John 10:11-15

Behold, the Lord God will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him. He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young. Isaiah 40:10-11

Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. Heb 13:20-21

I AM The Resurrection and the Life

Jesus said unto her, I AM the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world. John 11:25-27

And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.  And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day. John 6:39-40

I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.  Rev. 1:18

I AM The Way, (I AM) the Truth, and (I AM) the Life

We actually see three I AM statements wrapped up all in this one passage.

Jesus saith unto him, I AM the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. John 14:6

Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh. Heb 10:19-20

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John 1:14

Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. Acts 4:12

I AM THE TRUE VINE

I AM the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. I AM the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. John 15:1,5

And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious. Isaiah 11:10

Now will I sing to my wellbeloved a song of my beloved touching his vineyard. My wellbeloved hath a vineyard in a very fruitful hill: and he fenced it, and gathered out the stones thereof, and planted it with the choicest vine, and built a tower in the midst of it, and also made a winepress therein: and he looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes.

For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah his pleasant plant: and he looked for judgment, but behold oppression; for righteousness, but behold a cry.  Isaiah 5:1-7

I AM the King

This one would  be speculation to some, because it is not said in order. But Jesus does answer Pilate that He was born for this. Depending on the translation, Jesus answers affirmatively, ‘you say rightly that I AM’ or ‘you say correctly that I AM’.

Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.

Here is a Bonus I AM Statement

This is the Bible story of Jesus walking on the sea in John 6:15-21. Where He says, ‘It is I’, the words literally mean I AM. Here is a short video by Bolivian missionary Kees Boer on the subject.

[…] The city of David where Christ was born has much significance.  Bethlehem Ephratah is the first mentioned in the Bible as where Rachel (Jacob/Israel’s) mother was buried.  As I was reminded by my friend Susan, the Hebrew meaning of Bethlehem is special, (בֵּית לֶחֶם‎ Bet Lehem) means ‘House of Bread’.  We of course know that Jesus is the true Bread, the Bread from Heaven.  Jesus said, I am the Bread of Life (see my Seven “I AM” statements article here). • Where is this world headed? How can I be saved? - Redeeming Moments :

[…] In His Second Coming, Jesus comes as the Lion of the Tribe of Judah. He is also seen as the Lamb who was slain. In Revelation 5, we also see Him as the Lion of the tribe of Judah, opening the seals of judgment (aka the Title Deed to the earth), taking back dominion from the god of this age (satan), placing everything under His feet. That false god has blinded minds from the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ (2 Cor 4:1-6). Over and over in the book of John we are told what we must do to be saved – believe on Him as our Savior to receive the free gift of eternal life – Rom 6:23. John is a book whose purpose was evangelical – John 20:31. It also is a book that heavily reveals the Deity of Jesus. […]
